Kinds

Kinds in JobBag define the types of activities or services your organisation performs.

They act as cost centres and are used to allocate costs and charges across all areas of the system—from job costing and timesheets to invoices and payroll.

What Are Kinds?

Kinds are JobBag’s way of tracking:

  • All in-house work (e.g., time spent on client or internal jobs)
  • Supplier charges (e.g., printing for a client)
  • Overheads and in-house materials
  • Talent, media, forecasting, and milestones

💬 The term “Kind” helps avoid confusion with tasks or roles—it refers to the activity that determines value or charge rate.

How Kinds Work

  • Each Kind has a charge rate (what you bill) and hourly rate (internal cost).
  • Used in planning, job costing, estimating, timesheets, and invoicing.
  • When a job uses a Kind, the cost is calculated by:

Charge Rate × Time Spent = Job Value

    e.g., $100/hr × 5 hours = $500

  • All costs—whether client jobs or overheads—must be assigned to a Kind.

Kinds in the Bigger Picture

Kind Types

System Maintained Core system Kinds JobBag manages
User-Defined Custom Kinds for Job Costing or Overheads
Payroll Kinds Used for salary costing & payroll mapping

  • Each Kind can have a default mark-up (for supplier costs) and charge rate.
  • You can also set special mark-ups or rates that override the defaults.

Special Mark-Ups (hierarchy of override):

  1. Job
  2. Client
  3. Supplier
  4. Kind

Special Rates (hierarchy of override):

  2. Client
  3. Employee

Categories & Hierarchy

Kinds are structured in a hierarchical list for clarity:

  • Categories – appear on the left
  • Kinds – indented under each Category
  • Items – listed under each Kind
  • Nodes/Sub-Kinds – additional layers for detailed breakdown

This structure helps with grouping, reporting, and planning.
